We are excited to announce the expansion of our shelter leadership team as our current director transitions to the new role of Regionwide Community Specialist. The shelter leadership team will be composed of the new Shelter Director, Regionwide Community Specialist, and Shelter Operations Coordinator.
SUMMARY:The Caring Place Shelter Director works collaboratively with the President & CEO and administrative leadership team (particularly the Business Manager, Regionwide Community Specialist, and Shelter Operations Coordinator) to promote and carry-out The Caring Place mission and vision, strategic plan, and all duties and responsibilities described below. The director supervises, manages, and coordinates all in-house shelter and client service programs and logistics for The Caring Place, Inc. and acts as liaison to Porter Starke Services' Women's Recovery Program, Healthlinc, and the Porter Co. Sheriff's Dept, as well as other partners/programs as needed. The Shelter Director, first and foremost, must ensure that the shelter itself operates smoothly, efficiently, compliantly, and with compassion, maintaining appropriate staffing at all times, all shifts. SUMMARY: -The Caring Place Shelter Director works collaboratively with the President & CEO and administrative leadership team (particularly the Business Manager, Regionwide Community Specialist, and Shelter Operations Coordinator) to promote and carry-out The Caring Place mission and vision, strategic plan, and all duties and responsibilities described below. -The director supervises, manages, and coordinates all in-house shelter and client service programs and logistics for The Caring Place, Inc. and acts as liaison to Porter Starke Services' Women's Recovery Program, Healthlinc, and the Porter Co. Sheriff's Dept, -as well as other partners/programs as needed. -The Shelter Director, first and foremost, must ensure that the shelter itself operates smoothly, efficiently, compliantly, and with compassion, maintaining appropriate staffing at all times, all shifts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Passionately maintains and supports a positive, cohesive staff and agency culture in close collaboration with the President & CEO.
  • Interprets and implements the standards of national and state agencies to ensure compliance in the operation of client services, both residential and non-residential.
  • Determines progress in achieving goals as established by the CPI -Board of Directors.
  • Works closely with Shelter Operations Coordinator and confers regularly with admin and staff members relating to the operation of the shelter and delivery of other client services in the community.
  • Provides supervision for Community Advocates in Lake, Porter, and Starke Counties in collaboration with Regionwide Community Specialist.
  • Provides pertinent procedure, programming, staffing, and client services information updates in decision-making in management team meetings. -
  • Supervises staff to provide client services to residential and non-residential clients of the shelter as needed.
  • Works collaboratively with Shelter Operations Coordinator to manage day-to-day shelter operations.
  • Collaborates with Regionwide Community Specialist to evaluate capabilities of local or community agencies or groups to serve as a resource for CPI clients. -
  • Schedules staff for shelter coverage in collaboration with Shelter Operations Coordinator.
  • Organizes and conducts training and staff development programs and ensures a trauma-informed, strengths based approach to all shelter services.
  • Holds regular staff meetings. -
  • Answers 24-hour crisis line as needed. -
  • Provides assistance to staff in case management as needed. -
  • Conducts weekly client review meetings and monthly Client Assistant meetings.
  • Attends staff, board, state organization, and committee meetings as assigned.
  • Compiles statistics and reports as required in a timely manner for Business Manager, grants, programs, etc. -
  • Participates in presentations and partnerships as assigned by President & CEO. -
  • Creates/evaluates procedures pertaining to delivery of client services. - - - -
  • In collaboration with Regionwide Community Specialist, maintains and supports positive working relationships with area college programs regarding Shelter internships.
  • Creates program development and refinements to meet the changing needs of CPI clientele and communities served. -
  • Provides on call coverage at all times; institutes an on call schedule.
  • Other duties as assigned by the President/CEO
    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Supervises all shelter staff employees, in-house partners, and volunteers. -Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's & partners' policies, strategic plan, and applicable laws. -Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees & volunteers; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance in collaboration with the President & CEO; supporting staff advancement; mentoring and managing accountability of employees; addressing shelter complaints and resolving problems; overseeing peer review process. -Promotes effective teamwork throughout the organization and promotes a one-campus, one-staff collaborative culture at all times. -
    *Performs other duties as assigned by the President/CEO.Education and Experience:Masters degree in Social Work, Psychology, or other related field preferred.Bachelor degree and applicable experience may be considered.Experience in the field of domestic violence is strongly recommended. -Demands/ Work Environment:The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job in an office/shelter setting. -Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. -
