Job Description:
SUMMARY:The Safety and Environment Specialist is responsible for
driving EHS and lean improvements across assigned workshops by
identifying and culling system deficiencies and failures.
Additional Responsibilities include; developing a culture of safe
behavior, risk recognition and abatement, leading incident
investigation, championing safety training, and ensuring compliance
to applicable regulations and industry best practices. This
position will also assist the Material Manager with receiving
shipments and deliveries for the shop.Who we areAt SMS group, our

What you'll doTransform a growing safety program to a world class
safety programResponsible for the safe commissioning and for the
new Gary workshopChampion overall safety responsibilities for the
Gary workshopPromote safety as continuous improvement program and
ensure employees are constantly committed to this process.Maintains
a strong shop floor/site presence, engage employees, promote
improvement opportunities and forge relationships with employees at
all levels.Interpret environmental, health and safety regulations
and recommend measures to help protect workers from potentially
hazardous conditionsUtilize advanced analytics to drive decision
making and keep managers aware of their locations safety
performance.Facilitate 5s and lean improvement projectsWork with
workshop management to develop incident reductions and strategic
safety plans.Conduct safety leadership training for managers,
supervisors and specialistsManage and lead incident
investigations/workers compensation claims, evaluate for trends and
collaborate with management to institute tangible corrective
actions.Conduct EHS compliance audits for Gary workshop to verify
continuing compliance with corporate and regulatory
compliance.Identify and utilize technology products to aid in
injury reduction and safety improvement.Assist with Capex projects
to ensure proper RPOs, contractors meet safety standards and
equipment/projects do not create unintended
consequences.Participate in project management to ensure new
equipment, layouts and other improvements meet safety and 5S
standards.Provide feedback and recommendations on how to improve
the safety system to the corporate office.Manage the workshop's
Environmental Management SystemExamine shipment contents and
compare with records, such as packing list, invoices, or purchase
orders to verify accuracy. Record received materials and create
inventory labels within GSS program.Record shipment data, such as
weight, charges, damages or discrepancies for reporting,
accounting, purchasing or recordkeeping purposes.Confer or
correspond with vendors and shippers to rectify problems, such as
damages, shortages, or nonconformance to specifications.Work with
Material Manager to move received material to proper location as
needed.Print and attached labels to received material before
material is moved to storage.Performs other related duties as
assigned by management.What you'll needBachelor's Degree (BA) from
four-year college or university, or one to two years of related
experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education
and experience.Computer skills required:Microsoft Office Suite/
Proficient in Excel/ PPT1-3 years of overall professional
experience in management and/or related discipline.Experience with
development, management of safety systems across multiple
locationsProject management skills required to keep projects on
targetDemonstrated success in implementing and complying with
corporate policies.Demonstrated success in achieving results, using
team driven philosophies.Demonstrated proficiency in supporting
corporate interest among remote site locations.Knowledge of
federal/state/ local safety regulationsAbility to communicate and
exercise positive interpersonal skills.Lean experience is a
plusMust possess a valid driver's licensePhysical demandsFrequently
required to stand, walk or sit.Occasionally/Frequently/Continually
required to utilize hand and finger dexterity.Occasionally required
to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel or crawl.Continually required
to talk or hear.Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions
(non-weather).Continually works near moving mechanical
parts.Occasionally works around fumes, airborne particles, or toxic
chemicals.Occasionally exposed to outside weather
conditions.Occasionally exposed to extreme heat or cold
(non-weather).While performing the duties of this job, the noise
level in the work environment ranges from very quiet to loudThe
employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50
pounds.Specific vision abilities required by this job include:
close vision; distance vision; color vision; peripheral vision;
depth perception and ability to adjust focus.Additional remarks
